Critics Consensus

Nick Kroll takes up the torch from Mel Brooks and does him proud with an all-star sketch series that's just as uproariously funny -- and as hit-and-miss -- as the original motion picture.

History of the World: Part II: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) David Bianculli NPR It's consistent with the approach and the outrageous humor of Mel Brooks over more than 70 years of provoking big bursts of laughter. "History Of The World: Part II" is barely historical, but it's fairly hysterical. Mar 14, 2023 Full Review History of the World: Part II: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Why, it’s a wacky melding of the old and the new. Rated: 3/4 Mar 11, 2023 Full Review History of the World: Part II: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Four hours of sketch comedy means that there’s going to be plenty of misses alongside the hits... Thankfully, there is usually some lovely loopiness -- a key Brooks trait -- bubbling away. Rated: 3/5 Mar 10, 2023 Full Review History of the World: Part II: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Ed Fortune Starburst Those familiar with Mel Brooks’ work will be delighted that the entire series evokes his sense of humour. Unfortunately, that also means it’s very hit-and-miss. Rated: 3/5 May 9, 2023 Full Review History of the World: Part II: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Kristian M. Lin Fort Worth Weekly Just like Brooks’ filmography, the show is uneven, but on the occasions when it’s firing, it’ll make you laugh and laugh. Apr 19, 2023 Full Review History of the World: Part II: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Kathryn Reklis The Christian Century There is a lot of nonsense in History of the World, Part II, but perhaps its most potent insight is admitting just how much our ideas about history are formed through pop culture. Carlos O Great actors, some funny parts but they just got dragged into being in a "Mel Brooks" production. This is the worst thing I've seen in a while. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Tony J Utter disposable garbage. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Allison C Thoroughly enjoyable. The jokes are smart and layered. Every time I rewatch I find something new to laugh at. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/24 Full Review Joe N Absolutely awful. HotWP1 was an incredible feat of comedy. This was an embarrassment. Wish they would have stuck to big mouth and not tainted Mel Brooks' amazing work. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/11/23 Full Review matthias s "History of the World Part 2" is a rollercoaster of laughs and historical madness! With the return of Mel Brooks as the narrator and Nick Kroll taking the reins, the torch passing between these comedic legends is palpable. The star-studded cast, including Jack Black as Stalin and Josh Gad as Shakespeare, delivers punchlines with gusto. The skits about knoxville playing Rasputin are easily the funniest of the show. The series oscillates between hits and misses - when a skit lands, it's comedic gold, leaving you in stitches. However, when it falls flat, it crashes hard. But that's the risk of this classic Mel Brooks-style comedy! The absurdity of historical events brought to life with modern humor is both clever and occasionally outrageous. If you're willing to forgive the occasional misfire, this series is a riotous romp through history that's worth the watch! Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/27/23 Full Review Jake P It gives off the vibe of a Taika Waititi production, though it is written by Mel brooks accompanied by 28 other well known comedians. Seth Rogan, Nick Kroll and Wanda Sykes just to name a few. Apparently 40 years in the making,(older than I am) I would imagine worth the wait. Which means it's absolutely hilarious. As a huge Taika Waititi fan, seeing him play Frued was an absolute gem. Between the character and historical references and the incredibly witty puns, along side the snippets of the future imbedded in the show makes for a very well made comedy. It's accuracy probably not up to par but anyone watching this show probably isn't watching it for the historical accuracy. I find this to be one of the best comedies I may have ever watched, well, period. Very well written and put together I think a lot of time and thought has been put into the show and it's much appreciated by true fans of comedy. My hats off to Mel brooks for another great project!
